How do i determine the placement of fire escape stairs?

we're tasked to design an apartment in our design cl. i'm at home and the library is in school, and the internet hasn't been any help. i saw buildings with escape stairs on windows, but do i place only one escape stair on one vertical set of windows on the corridor window. or should every unit have a fire escape? please help asap.
