Technically, the mRNA is the result of the editing of the primary RNA transcript, which is what is produced directly from the DNA. The primary RNA transcript must be edited (in eukaryotes) to take out the parts that don't actually code for protein (the introns) and put the parts that do code for protein (the exons) together correctly. The result is the mRNA, which is then translated into the final protein product.
