Has the U.S. Iraq invasion deterred Al-Qaeda enrollment or sparked it?

It just seems that the # of suicide bombings/attacks in Iraq since we went over there is monumental? When was the last time there was so much comparitive bloodshed in that area that wasn't during a time we were there? Thanks for the info beforehand.
